The Morehouse Mystique + Mathematics = An Asset-Based Approach to Black Men’s Experiences
The Center for Mathematics Education Colloquium Series will be hosting Dr. Christopher Jett for a talk on Friday, April 8, 2022.
Title: The Morehouse Mystique + Mathematics = An Asset-Based Approach to Black Men’s Experiences
Abstract: In this talk, I will share findings from an ethnographic study with 16 Black male math majors who were graduating seniors at Morehouse College, the nation’s only historically Black college/university (HBCU) for men. Coupling Black masculinity theory with qualitative data collection and analytic techniques allowed me to ascertain intrinsic and extrinsic factors that led to the participants’ persistence in the math major. Themes that were generated from the study will be shared to promote dialogue regarding Black men’s persistence in undergraduate mathematics programs.
Dr. Chris Jett, from the University of West Georgia, will give a talk on Black male experiences in undergraduate mathematics (paper). The talk will be held virtually on Zoom (link), passcode: math.
