Dr. Janet E. Helms will give a public lecture on Thursday Feb. 29th from 4-6 PM EST titled, "WHMP" Lash: A Model for Revealing How Power and Privilege Contributes to Racial Injustice, hosted by the Counseling Psychology Program, and co-sponsored by the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education in the College of Education and the Department of Psychology in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences.

Dr. Helms is currently a Professor Emeritus at Boston College, and previously held the prestigious position of Augustus Long Professor in the Department of Counseling, Developmental, and Educational Psychology and Director of the Institute for the Study and Promotion of Race and Culture. Dr. Helms was also previously on the faculty in the UMD Counseling Psychology Program within the Department of Psychology from 1981-1999.
Dr. Helen A. Neville, Society of Counseling Psychology President will moderate the Q&A and engage in conversation with Dr. Helms following the public lecture as a part of her presidential initiative, Justice & Joy: Transforming Healing Praxis. Dr. Neville is currently a Professor of Counseling Psychology and African American Studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She has published over 90 articles and edited 5 books in the areas of race, racism, racial identity, and radical healing.
