CTV News interviewed Pamela Callahan, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Maryland’s Center for Educational Innovation and Improvement, for a segment on Pillar 2 of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. Pillar 2 focuses on attracting and retaining high-quality, diverse teachers and leaders across the state of Maryland, including through competitive salaries, rigorous teacher preparation programs, and a career ladder with standards for advancement and compensation.
“The career ladder is probably the most innovative component of the Pillar 2 goals for schools, and it fundamentally shifts what it means as a profession for teachers to grow and develop without leaving the classroom,” said Callahan. “It says, we're going to offer teachers the opportunity to have autonomy [and] responsibility within the role of classroom teacher.”
