Program Overview

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (P.B.C.) prepares educators to work with multilingual learners across content areas in K-12 settings. This program is meant for those who are:

1. Currently practicing non-ESOL/ELD teachers who want to learn how to address their multilingual learners’ needs in their content areas; or

2. Currently practicing non-ESOL/ELD teachers who want to move into ESOL; or

3. Currently practicing ESOL/ELD teachers who entered the field through Praxis only and want to get formal education in the field.

This program will help students prepare to take and pass the ESOL Praxis exam in Maryland towards getting an add-on ESOL endorsement. The program lasts one calendar year with new students starting the program each fall.

Students who finish the P.B.C. may apply for our M.Ed. in TESOL Program and, if accepted through a separate application process, can transfer the 12 P.B.C. credits towards the 30-credit TESOL M.Ed. This program also provides students with the pre-requisite courses needed for admissions into our Ed.D. in School System Leadership Specialization in TESOL and Dual Language Education Program.

NOTE: This program is for currently practicing, already certified K-12 teachers (any discipline) in public schools or public charter schools working with multilingual learners. This program does not lead to initial certification in ESOL. For more information regarding certification, contact Dr. Drew Fagan at dfagan@umd.edu.
