Middle College Program
Prepare to become a teacher while still in high school! The Middle College Program, a partnership between the University of Maryland, Prince George’s County Public Schools and Prince George’s Community College, allows students to earn their high school diploma and associate degree in teacher education (A.A.T.) at the same time. Students must then apply and be admitted to the University of Maryland, before seamlessly enrolling into the College of Education.
Program Components
Prince George’s County Public Schools/Prince George’s Community College

Students must be enrolled at the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s Community College. The Academy of Health Sciences offers a Teacher Preparation Program that blends high school and college work through the use of dual enrollment credits. Middle College Program students choose from three teaching pathways: early childhood/early childhood special education, middle school math/science and special education. Students will graduate with a high school diploma from Prince George’s County Public Schools and an associate of arts in teaching from Prince George’s Community College.
Students interested in the Teacher Preparation Program must apply to the Academy of Health Sciences at Prince George’s County Community College during their eighth grade year.
The University of Maryland

Middle College Program students who earn their high school diploma and A.A.T. will be considered for admissions to the University of Maryland. Students apply to the university as freshmen, submitting their high school academic record, required supporting documents, and college academic record as part of our holistic application review process. High School students should speak with their school counselors/college advisors about completing the Common App.
Upon admission to the University of Maryland, students will be eligible to enroll in first-semester junior year coursework. Transfer credits with a grade of "C" or higher will count toward a Bachelor’s degree.
Students must complete at least 60 credits at the University of Maryland and meet the following requirements to earn a degree:
- General education (completed at PGCC and/or UMD as required, if not completed at PGCPS)
- Pre-professional content and education requirements (completed at PGCC and/or UMD as required)
- Required professional education program coursework (completed at UMD)
Special note: Students who want to pursue teaching careers in elementary and secondary education (such as mathematics, science, English, social studies, world languages, TESOL, or art) may be admitted into the College of Education with special consideration.
