Thousands of Maryland Students are Chronically Absent Each Year. Here’s What we Know

A recent Capital News Service article sheds light on the significant rise in chronic absenteeism among Maryland students, defined as missing more than 10% of school days. Assistant Professor of Education Policy Jing Liu discusses what causes students to miss school.

“There’s no single reason for student absenteeism,” says Liu. “It’s really complex in terms of the interplay between the individual student, their family, their school environment and even their community.”

The article also referenced a study from the Journal of Economics, to which Liu contributed, that found missing school can result in lower test scores and grades.
