CHSE Alums Win Maryland School Counselor Association Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD (July, 2015) – Two graduates of the College of Education were honored this year with prominent awards from the Maryland School Counselor Association.

Daniel Peabody (M.Ed. School Counseling ’05) was named Maryland’s 2015 Middle School Counselor of the Year. Mr. Peabody is a counselor at Patapsco Middle School in the Howard County Public Schools.

Dr. Ileana Gonzalez (Ph.D. Counselor Education ’12) received the Counselor Educator of the Year award. Dr. Gonzalez is an assistant professor in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, where she coordinates the School Counseling Fellows Program. Prior to her doctoral work at the College of Education, Dr. Gonzalez was an urban high school counselor in southern Florida, primarily serving Caribbean immigrant populations. Now her research interests include examining the commitment of urban school counselors to social justice issues.

Mr. Peabody and Dr. Gonzalez are just two examples of the fine practitioners and scholars who emerge from the College of Education’s superb counseling program. As previously reported, U.S. News & World Report has now ranked the counseling program #1 in the nation for the sixteenth consecutive year.

The Maryland School Counselor Association (MSCA) has been a chartered division of the American School Counselor Association for over 50 years. Its mission is to promote excellence in the profession of school counseling and to foster the academic, career, and social-emotional growth of all students.
