UMD College of Education Undergraduate Elementary Program Ranked in 98th Percentile by NCTQ

COLLEGE PARK, MD (December, 2016) – The University of Maryland College of Education ranked in the 98th percentile for its undergraduate elementary teacher preparation program, according to a 2016 report by the National Council on Teacher Quality.

The NCTQ weighs a variety of factors in determining rankings, including admissions criteria and content knowledge, and rated UMD’s program near the top of more than 800 undergraduate programs preparing elementary teachers. The UMD College of Education strives for excellence in preparing the nation's teachers and welcomes the opportunity to learn from these data.

“We are pleased to see our Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education recognized for its high quality in preparing students for the challenging and critical job of teaching young students,” John O’Flahavan, Ph.D., said. Dr. O’Flahavan, associate chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, oversees teacher preparation programs.

The NCTQ, which evaluates the quality of teacher preparation programs for its Teacher Prep Reviewreport, released the findings on December 8.

The elementary education degree program, which is housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership, prepares students to qualify for teacher certification in Maryland. The UMD College of Education offers a wide-range of teacher preparation programs for undergraduate and graduate students, which include programs in middle school math and science, special education, secondary education, Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), and a Master of Education with Certification (MCERT) program that includes several certification areas

Previously in 2016, the UMD College of Education was recognized by Diverse magazine as being No. 14 for conferring bachelor degrees in education to minority students. The College’s graduate programs also shone in the 2017 U.S. News and World Report rankings, ranking 26th overall amongst the nation’s graduate schools of education, as well as 13th in Special Education and 14th in Secondary Teacher Education.
