COLLEGE PARK, MD (December, 2011) One of the nation’s leading education professional organizations, NASPA Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education, has named Dr. Kevin Kruger (’81, ’92) as its first president.* Dr. Kruger emerged as the NASPA Board of Director’s top candidate after a comprehensive national search.
In her announcement to the NASPA membership, the president of the Board of Directors Patricia Telles-Irvin writes, “Dr. Kruger brings to the presidency an extensive organizational history and professional background. His career represents more than 30 years of experience as a student affairs leader, during which he has worked as a tireless consensus builder, earning the respect of his colleagues and peers.”
Dr. Kruger received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland’s College of Education in Counseling and Personnel Services, now part of the newly reorganized Department of Counseling, Higher Education and Special Education. His highly successful career as a student affairs professional spans over 30 years and includes work at various institutions, including UMD, Southern Methodist University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He has published and presented nationally on leadership development, technology and student learning, student affairs administration and international education.
For the past 18 years, Dr. Kruger has served as the associate executive director of NASPA, the chief operating and financial officer of the association. Dr. Kruger will assume the presidency on March 15, 2012.
When asked about his selection as president, Dr. Kruger says, “I am thrilled and humbled with the opportunity to serve as NASPA’s first president. NASPA is a thriving organization with a strong and successful history – and I am proud to be a part of its future.”
Dr. Kruger continues, offering a look at the organization’s priorities under his future leadership, “These are challenging times in higher education and it is vital that student affairs perspectives be represented in the national dialogue around issues of access, student success, and degree completion.”
