Program Overview

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, Post-Baccalaureate Certificate (P.B.C.) prepares educators to work with multilingual learners across content areas. It also helps students prepare to take and pass the TESOL Praxis exam in Maryland to get an add-on ESOL endorsement. Students who finish the P.B.C. may apply for the M.Ed. in TESOL and, if accepted through a separate application process, can transfer the 12 P.B.C. credits towards the 30-credit TESOL M.Ed.

TESOL is an area of critical teacher shortage in Maryland and across the country. Our program better prepares educators to support multilingual students, particularly those in mainstream educational settings.

Note: Our P.B.C. currently operates exclusively through a school district partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools. Admissions is not available for individuals outside of this partnership. If you are a full-time employee in PGCPS with a teaching credential, please contact the PGCPS ELD Office for further details. If you are a district supervisor outside of PGCPS interested in developing a new partnership for teachers in your district, contact Drew Fagan at dfagan@umd.edu.
