Specialization Area Studies for M.Ed. Teacher Leadership Emphasis

Specialization Area Studies: 15 credits minimum in the specialization. Students will work with their advisors to determine the specific courses.  

SPECIALIZATION AREAS 

1.  Art Education Pedagogy and Content: (15 cr)  

  • TLPL 631: Historical Foundations of the Arts in Education 
  • TLPL 632: Understanding and Teaching Aesthetics 
  • ART Course approved by advisor 
  • Electives: (6 cr) from among TLPL courses and other departments in the University that support student interests and needs and are relevant to the specialization area. 

2. Arts Integration Pedagogy and Content (15 cr)

  • TLPL 631: Historical Foundations of the Arts in Education - fall course
  • TLPL 632: Understanding and Teaching Aesthetics - fall course
  • TLPL 688 X: Special Topics in Curriculum and Instruction: Foundations of Arts Integration (3 cr) OR
  • TLPL 688 X: Special Topics in Curriculum and Instruction: Artist Teacher Institute (3 cr) - summer only
  • Electives: (6 cr) from among TLPL courses and other departments in the University that support student interests and needs and are relevant to the specialization area. 

3.  Elementary/Middle School Pedagogy and Content: (15 cr)

4. English Literacy Education Pedagogy and Content: (15 credits)  

Offers sub-specializations in a) Adolescent, Post-Secondary, and Community Literacies; b) Language, Education, and Society; and c) Literature for Children and Young Adults

  • TLPL 640: Assessing, Diagnosing, and Teaching Writing (3 cr)  
  • TLPL 730: Theory and Research in English Education (3 cr)

  • Courses from relevant disciplines and concentrations, e.g., English literature or language; Communication; Literacy; Reading; Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages; Theatre; and/or other areas of professional studies. (6-9 cr) 

5.  Mathematics Education Introduction, Pedagogy and Content: (15 cr)

  • Introductory Course (3 cr) 
    • TLPL 610: Trends in Mathematics Education (3 cr)  
  • Pedagogy and Content:  
    • Mathematics Education, learning theory, or supporting content areas (3-6 cr). Suggested courses: 
      • TLPL 613: Developing Understanding in Mathematics (3 cr) 
      • TLPL 614: Assessing Mathematical Understanding (3 cr)  
      • TLPL 617: Understanding and Engaging Students' Conceptions of Mathematics (3 cr)  
      • Qualified mathematics students may also take either  
        • TLPL 710: Theory and Research on Mathematical and Scientific Thinking and Learning (3 cr) or
        • TLPL 712: Foundation of Mathematics Education III: Curriculum (3 cr) 
    • Courses from Mathematics (6-9 cr) Number of credits to be agreed with advisor and to reflect candidate’s mathematics course history and current goals. Suggested courses:

6.  Minority and Urban Education Introduction, Pedagogy and Content: (15 cr) 

  • TLPL 774: Urban Education (3 cr)  
  • TLPL 658: Embracing Diversity in Classroom Communities (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 770: Black and Latino Education: History and Policy (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 788(x): Special Topics in Education: School Exclusion: Policy, Practice, and Preventions (3 cr)  
  • At least one additional 3-credit course in teacher leadership chosen in consultation with advisor. 
  • Additional Coursework: 
    • At least one research course (3 cr) chosen in consultation with advisor 
    • Up to three elective courses (9 cr), chosen in consultation with advisor. Electives courses that are relevant to the specialization area can be taken in TLPL and other University departments in support of students' interests and needs. 
  • TLPL 798: Special Problems in Education (Seminar Paper) (3 cr) 

7. Reading Education (Does not lead to the Reading Specialist Certification) 

Pedagogy and Content: (15 cr) Courses chosen with advisor’s approval from applicable reading and literacy education pedagogy and content courses. Suggested courses: 

  • TLPL 644: Foundations of Reading (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 645: Content Area Reading (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 650: Understanding, Evaluating, and Using Research in School Reading Programs (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 651: Leadership in School-Wide Reading Programs (3 cr) 
  • TLPL 652: Multicultural Materials and Instruction for K-12 Readers (3 cr) 

8. Science Education 

  • Introductory Course:
    • TLPL 620: Trends in School Curriculum: Science (3 cr)  
  • Pedagogy and Content (12 cr) chosen with advisor’s approval from science content and/or professional courses. Suggested course:  
    • TLPL 720: Foundations of Science Education (3 cr) 
  • Electives (none)  

9. Social Studies Education, Pedagogy, and Content: (12 cr) 

  • Social Studies Education (3 cr) chosen in consultation with advisor: 
    • Courses from a social science discipline or in history (3 cr) 
  • Electives (6 cr) sample courses:  
    • TLPL 775: Power, Privilege, Diversity, and Teaching (3 cr)  
    • TLPL 772: Teaching, Professional Development, and School Change (3 cr)  

10. Special Studies 

This option is open with the consent of the advisor to students seeking to build an individualized program within the M.Ed. framework. Identification of advisor is made by the Coordinator of Graduate Programs in consultation with the candidate and faculty members. The Graduate Research Committee (GREC) must approve the Individualized Program of Studies.
