Jennifer Rice and Dr. Peter Afflerbach Honored as 2021 AERA Fellows

Jennifer Rice and Dr. Peter Afflerbach have been honored as 2021 AERA Fellows. 

The American Educational Research Association (AERA) selects exemplary scholars based on their renowned research accomplishments. Fellows are selected by the Fellows Committee, and approved by the AERA Council, the association’s elected governing body.

Jennifer Rice is recognized for her scholarship on the economics of education which has helped examine educational policies concerning equity and adequacy in U.S. schools. The focus of Rice's work is on developing and retaining high-quality teachers to improve education standards. Rice has published several academic journals and governmental outlets and has issued her research in a variety of venues to reach effective policy communities.

Dr. Peter Afflerbach has made major contributions to literacy research over his extended career. Afflerbach has helped discover deep cognitive processes involved in reading and literacy teaching practices. He has focused on how proper assessment can best be leveraged to improve learning. He also became the editor of the Handbook of Individual Differences in Reading: Reader, Text, and Context, and a founding editor of the Metacognition in Learning journal. 

Provost Jennifer Rice was the former College of Education dean and is currently serving as Provost for the University of Maryland. She is also a University System of Maryland representative on the Maryland State Teacher Certification Advisory Council, and she served as co-chair of the Maryland Education Deans and Directors Council. 

Dr. Peter Afflerbach is a Professor of Reading in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. He received his Ph.D. in Reading Psychology, and his MS in Developmental Reading from the State University of New York at Albany.
