Kelly Mix, Professor and Chair of the Department of Human Development and Quantitative Methodology, was a plenary speaker at the Erikson Institute's 2019 Promising Math conference, held in Chicago in November, 2019. Her talk, "Cognition and Early Childhood Numeracy: How Number Concepts are Built and Why Input Matters," was presented to an audience of researchers, teachers, and educational outreach providers.
In a follow-up interview, How Children Learn about Numbers: A Conversation with Kelly Mix, Dr. Mix discussed opportunities in daily life for families to talk about quantities and familiarize children with number words and symbols. Dr. Mix also touched on relational learning processes that families, caregivers, and teachers can leverage to help children make sense of number meanings.
