Education Dive: Study - Parental involvement lessens effects of bullying on middle schoolers

Cixin Wang

An article in Education Dive highlights recent research by UMD College of Education Assistant Professor Cixin Wang. The research on how parental involvement in their children’s education buffered children against mental health issues resulting from bullying was published in the journal School Psychology.

The findings suggest that middle school students who feel that their parents are more involved with their education experience fewer mental health problems than students who saw parents as less involved. The protective effects were particularly evident in white students, girls, and 8th-graders, and only apply to face-to-face bullying, not cyberbullying.

Dr. Wang is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education. Her research interests include bullying and bullying prevention as well as parenting practice and family involvement.
