A recent WMAR-2 news story highlights Maryland’s new Civic Excellence Program, which will allow public high school students to earn a Seal of Civic Excellence on their diploma or transcript by demonstrating civic readiness, engagement and leadership through activities such as community service, participation in government and civic-focused capstone projects.
The program, signed into law by Governor Wes Moore, aims to encourage lifelong civic participation and recognize students who make meaningful contributions to their communities. The legislation was supported by the College of Education. Lena Morreale Scott, director of the Civic Education and Engagement Initiative and principal investigator of the Maryland Democracy Initiative, testified before the Maryland House Ways and Means Committee and submitted written testimony in support of the bill.
