WYPR Baltimore: Never too Late – Adult Education and Literacy

A WYPR Baltimore podcast on adult education in Baltimore features UMD College of Education Assistant Professor Tara Brown, who discusses the realities and challenges students face in completing high school.

“There’s a host of factors outside of the school that make it challenging for kids to focus on learning. The vestiges of poverty, I would say,” Dr. Brown told WYPR Baltimore. “And then inside the school you have a variety of other challenges, especially now in this high stakes era of testing and remediation. I think young people are often in learning environments that are not engaging to them, that they’re not learning things that are really hooking into their interests and desires.”

Dr. Brown is an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. Previously a classroom teacher in secondary alternative education, her research focuses on the educational experiences of students in urban schools.
