The Conversation: Test prep is a rite of passage for many Asian-Americans

Julie Park

In an article written for the Conversation, CHSE’s Julie Park evaluates why Asian American students often achieve high test scores on exams such as the ACT and SAT. Dr. Park describes three factors that might help explain trends surrounding the high test scores.

Dr. Park says that factors such as frequent messages from an early age about the importance of doing well on tests, access to quality education compared with other minority groups and that test prep businesses often cater to Asian American communities might help account for the high test scores Asian Americans make on standardized tests.

Dr. Park is an associate professor in the Department of Counseling, Higher Education, and Special Education. Dr. Park’s research interests include racial diversity and equity in higher education and Asian American college students.
