David Weintrop Awarded Funding for Interest and Data Research Project
Assistant Professor David Weintrop received a funding award from the National Science Foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program for his project, API Can Code: Situating Computational Learning Opportunities in the Digital Lives of Students.
Weintrop's project will focus on creating interest and data-driven computer science curriculum and researching how the role of interest and data impacts students’ perceptions of computer science, computer science knowledge, and understanding of the impacts of computing and data on their lives.
"My research seeks to understand how best to support learners in developing meaningful understandings of computational ideas and positive attitudes towards computing," says Weintrop.
The project is set to last 5 years and will focus on a curriculum for high school students and teachers from the DC Public Schools.
Weintrop is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching & Learning, Policy & Leadership in the College of Education with a joint appointment in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland. He has a Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences from Northwestern University and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Michigan.
