As colleges aim to increase the number faculty of color on their campuses, they must work to create safe and supportive spaces for them. In a blog post by New America, Distinguished University Professor Sharon Fries-Britt shares her experience as a black professor at UMD. 

Fries-Britt said that the promotion of scholars of color to leadership positions at the University of Maryland led to positive changes around the distribution of service labor. She notes that the College of Education, specifically, has a Black woman serving as the dean and two department chairs who are men of color. “They get it,” and understand the importance of “thinking about who is doing what,” she explained.
