An article in The Baltimore Banner examines the rise in Asian student enrollment at Johns Hopkins University following the 2023 Supreme Court decision that restricted race-conscious admissions in higher education. The number of Asian students in the first-year class jumped significantly, while Black and Hispanic enrollment declined.
Professor Julie J. Park suggests that the increase may be a result of its global reputation as a top-tier medical school. She also adds, “I think there can be a snowball-type effect. Like attracts like, and a school can get a reputation for being friendly to a particular group, which could encourage more students in that group to apply.”
Although the increase in Asian student enrollment at Johns Hopkins differs from trends at other highly selective institutions, Park warns against drawing firm conclusions or predicting long-term patterns. Still, she notes that universities’ self-reported first-year class demographics can offer early hints of what may lie ahead.
