AI-Related Academic Violation Cases at UMD Increased in 2024-25 School Year, Data Shows

As reported by The Diamondback, artificial intelligence (AI)-related academic violations at the University of Maryland increased during the 2024-25 academic year, a trend several faculty members attributed to the growing accessibility of AI tools.

Associate Professor David Weintrop emphasized the importance of teaching students how to engage thoughtfully with these tools. 

“My motivation is less about making sure they don’t break rules or university policies,” he said. “It is much more strongly coming from a perspective of these are students that are graduating, about to enter the workforce and go out into the real world where these AI tools exist. … A core responsibility we have as educators in higher ed at this moment in time is to prepare students to be informed and savvy users of generative AI technologies.”
