Terps EXperiencing College through Education and Employment Discovery

TerpsEXCEED is a 2-year certificate program at the University of Maryland for students with ID who would not be able to apply to and attend UMD through a traditional pathway. This is a non-degree program that culminates in a College and Career Studies Certificate through our Office of Extended Studies, which includes a transcript of all students’ academic coursework (audit and pass/fail allowed) that is aligned with students’ career interests. In addition, students will participate in career development activities, work experiences, internships, and paid jobs.

Our mission is to create access for students with Intellectual Disability to develop a course of study aligned with individual career goals; ongoing career development that includes work experiences on and off campus; participation in campus social clubs and community organizations; use of all campus facilities; ability to earn a credential recognized by UMD; and inclusion in housing and residential life.

TerpsEXCEED students are UMD undergraduate students, like typical incoming freshmen – with student IDs and email accounts, access to UMD facilities, activities, and student organizations, and the choice to live on campus in dorms. Extra support is provided by TerpsEXCEED staff and a network of trained student Peer Mentors. The goal of the program is to give students a full college experience with the support they need while preparing them for careers after college.
