What does TerpsEXCEED look like?

TerpsEXCEED students are UMD students, like typical incoming freshmen, with student IDs and email accounts, access to UMD facilities, activities, and student organizations, and the choice to live on campus in dorms. 

Extra support is provided by TerpsEXCEED staff and a network of trained student Peer Mentors. 

Course of Study: Based on individual student career and interest assessments, students work with Undergraduate Studies to identify courses within General Studies that align with student interests and offer skills important to the identified career area. Over 2 years, the student will build a series of courses plus TerpsEXCEED internships that represent a TerpsEXCEED Course of Study. Students walk the stage with their undergraduate class at the College of Education commencement ceremony. 

Career Exploration/Employment: Throughout each semester, students engage in career development activities, work experiences, and internships on and off campus that align with their course of study focus area. 

Campus Membership: Students are expected to join at least one on-campus student organization, and work with trained Peer Mentors to access other on-campus activities (recreation centers and gyms, Stamp Union events, sports, concerts, volunteer work, etc.). 

Residential: On-campus dorm housing is available for those interested, at the standard Room & Board cost for any UMD student. For those who choose not to live on campus, they must have their own transportation to and from campus daily. Students who live on campus are supported by Peer Mentors and Resident Assistants (RAs), can participate in all dorm residential life activities, and must choose a standard Dining Plan. Students are encouraged to live on campus to foster full participation in all that the UMD campus has to offer. 

Campus Social Life: As students make friends and join groups, they may choose to participate in parties and spontaneous gatherings that develop naturally. TerpsEXCEED will provide training during orientation and throughout each semester to help students make good choices, and we will be available if they reach out for support, but the program will not monitor students 24/7; students need to display a certain level of self-awareness and responsibility to engage with community activities appropriately. TerpsEXCEED Students must abide by the UMD Code of Conduct, to remain a student at UMD.
