River Hill High Student’s Handbook for Immigrant Students Gains Regional Attention

Roselyn Bi, a Maryland high school junior, created a peer-to-peer handbook to help immigrant students navigate academic expectations, social norms and well-being. The Baltimore Sun highlights the handbook’s use in Howard County Public Schools and its goal to fill a gap typically overlooked in traditional school resources.

The handbook reflects a broader effort to foster belonging during a time of heightened uncertainty around immigration.

Associate Professor Oolleen O’Neal, who contributed to the handbook’s creation, says creating welcoming environments for families and students “can be a real power for good,” adding that “the [handbook] may tap into a good part of all of our hearts across the political spectrum, to be able to support people who are coming here from other countries.”
