Temperament and Narratives Lab

Emotion Coaching

We are partnering with the Do Good Institute at UMD to lead sessions for elementary school teachers on emotion coaching and using picture books to teach emotion regulation.

Over two training sessions, teachers learn to embed social-emotional learning (SEL) into storytime by:

  • Learning how children regulate emotions and then adapt coaching strategies for different temperaments and cultures
  • Learning how stories can be used as tools for emotion coaching and how to select books depending on your students’ unique needs
  • Using storybooks to authentically integrate SEL into typical classroom routines (e.g., storytime, morning meeting time)
