The Mathematics and Science Education specialization prepares researchers and transformative practitioners in K-16 mathematics and science education. Students in this program gain a deep understanding of classic and current research in mathematics and science education, theories of individual and social cognition, teacher education and professional development, and research methods commonly used by mathematics and science education researchers, all with an emphasis on the connections among theory, research, and practice. Students also develop their own abilities as mathematical and scientific thinkers. All students take a set of common courses addressing teaching, learning, policy, and teacher preparation in mathematics and science, as well as more specialized courses addressing mathematics or science education separately. Students also have opportunities to take science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) policy and leadership courses. The specialization takes advantage of the University of Maryland’s location in a high-needs urban school district near Washington, DC. Faculty in this program have connections to local schools that enable students to get involved with research and teacher professional development focused on the needs of urban schools.
The Technology, Learning, and Leadership specialization is designed to prepare students to become scholars and leaders in the study and design of learning technologies. This specialization is truly cross-disciplinary, drawing together students with diverse interests in teaching and learning, policy and leadership, but who share a focus on exploring the impact of technology on education. Graduates will be prepared to develop innovations in research, teaching, assessment, and leadership through the use, design, and understanding of learning technologies. They will be qualified to conduct research, teach and be leaders in diverse settings, including universities, formal and informal learning environments, and policy organizations. Students design a program with their advisor that incorporates a core cluster of technology-focused courses, in addition to discipline-based courses drawn from other specializations within the department. Students can choose to concentrate on learning to design technology environments, learning to critically evaluate their impact on education, or some combination. Faculty members who are affiliated with this specialization have research interests and expertise in virtual worlds for learning, design methodologies, learning sciences, and online learning. Faculty members situate their work in a variety of fields including science education, young people’s identity development, and education policy and evaluation.
The Master’s Certification Program (MCERT) is a graduate-level teacher preparation program that leads to elementary, middle school, secondary or preK-12 teacher certification and a Master of Education (M.Ed.). Content area specializations include Art, Dance, Elementary Education, English, Mathematics, Middle School Math and Science, Physical Education, Secondary Sciences (Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth/Space Science, Physics), Social Studies, TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and World Languages (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish).
The 13-month, 42-credit program is an intensive, full-time experience that integrates both theory and practice in a school-based program. Interns will be engaged in learning and teaching activities at a school site during the weekdays. In addition, interns will attend pedagogy and education courses on two nights a week as well as some Saturdays. The demands of this compact, intensive experience preclude MCERT interns from employment or graduate assistantships during the internship year. The MCERT program is offered only on an intensive full-time basis. We offer some of our courses in a hybrid format.
Candidates for the M.A. program in science education at the University of Maryland are K-12 or college-level teachers, other education professions, and/or people with a science background interested in careers in research and education-related careers outside K-12 schools. We usually recommend a M.Ed. instead of an M.A. program for candidates seeking to further their careers within K-12 schools. The Master of Arts is a 30-semester hour program that requires coursework in education, coursework in a science discipline, and a small independent research project.
The Masters of Education (M.Ed.) with emphasis in Teacher Leadership in the Schools option supports already certified beginning teachers and experienced educators in developing a sound common grounding in aspects of teaching, inquiry. The program emphasizes advanced professional development studies, which supports experienced teachers as accomplished professionals and instructional leaders and includes a choice of the following specializations: Art Education; Arts Integration; Elementary/Middle School Education; English Education; Mathematics Education; Minority and Urban Education; Science Education; Teaching English to Speakers of Others Languages (TESOL, non-certification); Social Studies Education; Special Studies; World Languages (non-certification).
The Elementary Education Undergraduate Program is a professional preparation program, designed to be completed in 4 years. Graduates are eligible for elementary teaching certification in the State of Maryland. The Program equips students to meet the challenges of teaching in the 21st century by preparing them to meet the needs of a diverse student body.
The Middle School Mathematics and Science Teaching Program (an undergraduate major) is designed to prepare candidates to earn a Bachelor of Science degree and to meet the MSDE requirements for dual certification in mathematics and science grades 4-9. The program courses are closely aligned with standards set by the State of Maryland and the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE).
Terrapin Teachers is an innovative program designed to produce a new generation of highly qualified instructors in STEM subjects. The minor in secondary education provides an opportunity for non-Education majors to enroll in a sequence of education courses that will introduce them to the teaching profession. The 15-credit minor incorporates courses in student development, issues in American public education, the importance of reading across the curriculum, and pedagogical foundations in teaching the core subjects in today's high schools. Students in the following majors/subject areas are eligible to declare the minor in secondary education: Studio Art, English, Foreign Language (Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, and Spanish), Mathematics, Science (Agricultural Education, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physics), and Social Studies (Geography, Government and Politics, and History). A minimum 2.5 GPA is also required to declare the minor in secondary education.
